Computer for Drill Room File Server

Recommended Specifications - New Computers

Note:  This specification reflects new computers readily available in November 2007. Due to the rapid evolution of computer hardware our recommendations will probably change at least every 6 months.

Drilling and routing programs stored on your Drill Room File Server are normally downloaded over your network to the hard disk of the computer connected to your machine.  Due to timing, noise, and data integrity problems inherent on a network, we never download directly from the File Server into the machine.  We always copy the file from the server to the local hard disk and then load the machine from the hard disk in the PC.  This is true whether we obtain the drill/route program over a network , from a floppy disk,  or copy from CD/DVD.  We always load a drill/route program from the hard disk of the computer connected directly to the machine.

Notes:   (1.)  In case of a network failure, the 3 1/2 inch drive can be used to copy drill/route programs to a floppy disk and then transfer them to the hard disks of the computers connected to you machines.  This can keep production up and running while network repairs are being made.

What's Really Important In a Drill Room File Server  (Reliability and Backup)

Today's computers are so fast and hard drives so large that you don't need the latest and great system for your Drill Room File Server.  As long as the computer will run the Microsoft Windows operation system of your choice, and is reliable, it should make a good server.

We recommend automatic and continual backup of all your drill/route files to another hard disk drive.  This 2nd hard disk can be physically in the same computer or in another computer connected to your network. Our Graphical Drill/Route Systems can be configured to automatically backup your Drill Room File Server on one of the computers connected to your machines. This completely automatic backup does not effect the normal use of the computer as a workstation for the machine.  However, in the case of a failure, you have a completely up-to-date copy of every drill/route program stored on your Drill Room File Server.

For permanent backup we recommend burning CD's or DVD's or using Flash Memory modules which are automatically configured by Windows as logical drives when they are plugged into a USB port on the file server computer. We do not recommend magnetic tape backup because you will never know, until it is to late, whether the tape is any good.
